very good analysis

Obviously not a piece intending to take a Christian point of view. But this article from TIME magazine is by far the best secular take on the whole "why do they do it?" question about mass murderers. This, more than anything I've posted so far, is worthy of a read.

concealed carry

This editorial, from August 2006, almost makes me cry. All the stuff I've read in the news, about VT being a bucolic, safest-place-in-the-world type campus....and there was an incident in which a building was evacuated on August 21st, 2006?!?!?!?!?

And someone was intelligent enough to write an op-ed piece about it.

And no one paid any attention.

AND THIRTY TWO PEOPLE WERE MURDERED.

reality

Here's a very persuasive piece in a fairly mainstream online newspaper about the whole second amendment issue revolving around the murders at Virginia Tech. I wasn't aware that VT was a 'gun-free zone'. Or, more precisely...that it was supposed to be.

Calvin and Hobbes

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Though I do like to take a look back at his face before he makes his ludicrous suggestion. Deadpan delivery...it always brings home the bacon.

long time coming

If you were wondering...no, the title of the post has nothing to do with anything. I really just couldn't come up with anything better. And so maybe the title is self-referential; you decide.

Another bit on global warming. Note: I really would give these guys a break, but they keep writing the coolest things! It's just so hard to resist. From the article (read the whole thing, if only for the lovely juxtaposition of HOT and COLD. Plus, you kinda have to see it to really believe it.):
While snow piles up outside our windows, we may be hard-pressed to believe climate change is occurring, global temperatures are rising and the planet is on a crash course of serious change if greenhouse gas emissions are not reduced.
Just beautiful. I couldn't have put it better myself.

Also. I have so much to tell you all. I just can't get inspired enough to say it.

Spears

Not the dill kind, though I don't like those much either. No, this is the first and last post I will ever make about Britney Spears.

I just wanted to extend an invitation to any of you who feel like experiencing a stomach-turning like no other. At least, when I had read three of the 'get well soon' messages from Britney's fans on her website, my stomach was definitely doing flips (no, this is not a joke). And all I had for supper was chicken and salad...you be the judge.

I don't hate Britney Spears. But I was physically nauseated by the content of the 'cute' and 'supportive' messages that have apparently been sent to her by her 'fans'. So I thought I'd pass along this pleasant sensation to you, my loyal readers.

Last EVER. I promise. I mean...NEVER again. Oh, and for those of you who are wondering why I even ended up at britneyspears.com ......see: bored. Also, see: I remembered that her website from a month ago had some bizarre picture of a tiger or something on it, and I was curious whether that monstrosity was still around (see further: very bored).

EDIT: I went back to the Firefox tab with the site open, to close it, and I literally (again, this is not a joke) almost threw up when my eyes chanced to hit upon some sort of drivel about how so-and-so was 'literally your BIGGEST fan'. Whew. Now heading out to play some futebol. Must...think....different....thoughts.

National Champions!

For the seventh time, too. The Lady Vols have done it again, though this is the first time it's happened since I was a relatively young boy. I actually grew up hearing about how great we had been, and watching us lose, time after time, to the University of Connecticut. Ick. But no more - we've beaten them the last three times we've played them, and more importantly, we have ourselves a national championship. As good as Candace Parker obviously is, tonight's victory was an absolutely picture-perfect team effort. Bobbitt's sublime three-pointers, Hornbuckle's incredible defense, and Anosike's amazing rebounding gave us our seventh national championship tonight. Here's hoping that next year brings us an eighth!

followup

Heh. I got a...*drumroll*...98% on the aforementioned lab report. So, what does this mean? It means that the teacher read that paragraph, agreed with it, and gave me a good grade. Any normal teacher would have read the paragraph, noticed that I was mocking her, and marked off an unspecified amount of points, and sent me a nasty email about how I should respect my superiors.

So yeah, that's a little disturbing.
